|Jacob and his wife Elizabeth came from near Kiev, Russia. I am told that they owned forest lands for generations which they were forced to sell in 1881 or 1882 when Tzar Nicholas III ascended to power in 1881, and passed an edict forbidding Jews from owning land. The Family was fortunate to be able to sell for a decent price to righteous Christian neighbors (again ancestral) and they fled to the US. The edict forbidding the owing of land by Jews preceded the now infamous pogroms of 1881- 188? – Fiddler on the Roof, etc. So, they were lucky to get out with something and start a new life.
